The sacrament by which a baptized man and woman establish between themselves a lifelong partnership for their mutual good and for the procreation and education of children.
Matrimony refers more to the relationship between husband and wife than to the ceremony, which is a wedding. The matter of this sacrament is the consent of the man and the woman, expressed externally by words and signs conferring the sacrament upon each other as witnessed by the Church.
Guidelines for Marriage at Saint Anne
Any engaged couple who wish to be married at St. Anne should contact our parish office at least 10-12 months prior to the desired wedding date. The couple should expect to meet with the pastor several times prior to marriage as well as attend an approved Marriage Preparation program (previously called pre-Cana).
The prospective bride or groom must be a parishioner of St. Anne, celebrated other sacraments here or have a relative who is a parishioner here. If not they may be married here if the time is available in the church and the priest or deacon from their home parish prepares them to marry and comes to St. Anne to perform the marriage.
It is best to check church availability before making a reception hall deposit.
A couple who have been married in a non-Catholic ceremony (example: by a Justice of the Peace) and wish to have their marriage ‘blessed’, can have their marriage “validated” at a church ceremony celebrating the sacrament of marriage.
Options for Scheduling Wedding Times:
Friday – afternoon or evening
Saturday – between 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m.
Sunday – after 1:00 p.m.
(Note: After 2:00 p.m. on any Sunday when Baptisms are also scheduled. St. Anne Parish generally schedules Baptisms on the first Sunday of each month.)
Any other times should be discussed with the parish priest as to his availability and our Mass, Baptism or Reconciliation schedules. Only the priest can confirm an available church date/time.
Marriage Preparation Programs:
Because the Catholic Church wants couples to form strong lasting marriages, couples who wish to marry in the Catholic Church are asked to participate in an approved Marriage Preparation Program.
Please make arrangements to attend a Marriage Preparation Program as early in your engagement as possible. Most programs book well in advance. The Marriage Ministries Office of the Archdiocese offers a list of places that hold these programs throughout the year. You can obtain additional information or view the Marriage Preparation Schedule [here] or by going to www.bostoncatholic.org; select the “Offices & Services” tab at the top, under “M” select Marriage Ministries and follow the link for Marriage Preparation. The Marriage Ministries Office can also be reached at 617-746-5801.
